Title:WMBS001.jpg
Description:Way Marker at Peg Folley Green Farm Hamlet. Inscribed Bolsterstone/Penistone/Uden. Grid Reference SK 252 983 Probably erected in 1734, but between the years of 1733 and 1738. The convention was that the traveller turned right at the inscription. From 1733 the overseers of the highways were directed by the West Riding Justices of the Peace to erect Guide Stoops at remote crossroads, five years later in 1738 a second order stated that Miles should also be inscribed on any new Stoops. An interesting fact is that some of the Stoops in the County which were inscribed with milages, used the Yorkshire mile of 2,200 yards rather than the statutory mile of 1,760 yards. The difference in length between the two measurements may have caused doubt in later years about the original positioning of some of these Stoops in other parts of the County.
