Title:SWGV010.jpg
Description:Works Chemical Works & Coke Ovens. The Coke Ovens were erected in 1916-17, near the Hawthorn Brook end of the works. They replaced the old gas making plant which used Halifax soft coal from the S.Fox colliery on Hunshelf. The plant purified and stored gas for the town. Coke was sold to blast-furnace plants, foundries and brewers. The Simon Carves 1917 tower was a familiar sight in the first part of the twentieth century. The plant closed in 1950 when the coal seam ran out. Many locals would remember the sight of hot coke being discharged from the ovens prior to being quenched.
